’Indonesia is the biggest Muslim population country in the entire Muslim world. My first visit in the year 2004 was a great success. During this visit I coined the expression “Smiling Islam”, to position the Indonesian Islam next to the Middle Eastern or the Arab World Islam. I would like to present my second visit last month and make a comparison with the first one. The aim is to explain and understand the situation in this country as an example of a possible change that has occurred in the world of Islam in a very complicated global context. The possibilities as well as the difficulties of developing a multicultural, pluralistic, democratic and open version of Islam, supporting human rights, will be the focus of my presentation’.
